Whenever I see a commercial on the television that shows an actress go ga-ga over her hair, I always think, “Wow, her hair looks gorgeous”. I know that they use special effects and computer gimmicks to make their hair look flawless but still, having perfect hair is everyone’s fantasy. I for one have had more bad hair days than good ones, and that’s especially true if I have to head for a party. My hair will look too oily or too frizzy just when I need them to look good. So much so that before every occasion I either need to straighten them at home using an electric hair-straightener or head to the saloon.

And that’s especially true for the summers. With the heat and sweat and humidity, taking care of and having good looking hair becomes even more challenging. Add to that the damaging effects of harsh UV rays, which seem to increase many fold during the heat waves. You need to keep so many things in mind such as having a shampoo and conditioner which cools your scalp, doesn’t dry up your hair too much, doesn’t leave it oily, repairs sun exposure damage etc. But, even though it may sound difficult, taking care of hair in summers can be something which everyone can do easily at home with a few simple tips and tricks. So what are they? Let’s find out.

Short Hair

The first and obvious trick is to cut your hair short. If you are a person who likes to experiment with various hairstyles, going for a cute short-haired look would be optimum during the summers. Short hair is easier to manage, more open to the air and hence natural drying out against sweat and easier to wash frequently. Plus regular trimming of hair helps you get rid of split ends.

If however, you do not want to give up on long hair, try to go for tied up hair. Buns, plats and knots can prove helpful. Leaving hair open in the heat and sticky sweat can make them prone to catch more dust. Or wear hats or caps. That way you can protect hair from direct sun rays and heat. But make sure your hat or cap is not too tight and allows room for your scalp to catch air otherwise it might further increase sweat accumulation on the scalp.

Another cool tip to protect your hair in summers is to go in for safe natural coloring. It is a known fact that direct heat rays bleach out the natural color of your hair. So instead of leaving your natural hair color at the sun’s mercy, apply a coat of some funky color to offer a layer of protection. But before going in for coloring make sure you do not opt for too many chemicals or other harming products, since some color brands can leave your hair dull and lifeless.

The need for frequent shampooing cannot be left out during the summers. Don’t let your hair become oily due to lack of cleansing. Keep washing your hair with cold water and some soothing and cooling shampoo and conditioner combo every 2 – 3 days. Not only will your scalp feel refreshed, the cool after effect of the shampoo will help you feel relaxed and light.

Summer Hair Cair

If you like swimming during summers, then before getting into the water make sure to wet your hair with tap water. That way when chlorinated water touches your hair, it will cause lesser damage. Another great tip here is to apply a coat of any leave-in conditioner and then plunge in. That way your hair will be protected against the chlorine and the sun rays. Make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly after the swim.
If you use hair-dryers regularly, avoid using them during summers since they can make your hair go sticky and stiff. Instead, let your hair dry out naturally. You can also use sun-block or sunscreens for hair to protect your locks against harmful UV rays.

Apart from the above, keep your body hydrated by taking in lots of fluids. Water, juices and smoothies are all good to keep your scalp hydrated and healthy. Remember, healthy hair is good looking hair and with small pointers as these, having a good hair day is not that difficult.
