Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving Day and marks that the holiday shopping season has officially begun. While not an “official” holiday, in the world of retailers it’s the busiest day of the year and the time for the most profits, while for consumers it’s all about saving as much money as possible and going home with the highest quality deals and most coveted items. For years, consumers have waited in lines for hours on end just to have the first opportunities to see sales and get limited items. 6:00am used to be the magic time that major department stores like Macy’s, Sears and Wal-Mart would open their doors.

Over the last 5-10 years, the numbers have slowly crept up, beginning earlier and earlier, and now there is a national debate about how consumerism has taken integrity out of the beloved American tradition of Thanksgiving, as many stores open their doors 8:00pm or earlier on the holiday. Stores being open on Thanksgiving mean two things: a day of being thankful for time spent with family has transformed into obsessions with materialism and that many retail employees will be required to work on this family oriented holiday.

Black Friday
If Black Friday deals aren’t enough, several years ago the Internet marketplaces of many major retailers created an online frenzy with Cyber Monday, or the Monday after Black Friday, where all the best deals will be offered via the World Wide Web. Cyber Monday is a great alternative and a great addition to Black Friday, because it allows shoppers to take advantage of the same (or better) deals from the comfort of their own homes.

Online shopping is taking over the marketplace as every major retailer nowadays has an online store, free shipping options, coupon codes and guaranteed delivery by December 24th, just in time for Christmas. For many consumers Black Friday and Christmas shopping through the entire month leading to Christmas is a beloved tradition; some people love the excitement of finding a deal on the spot, beating someone to finding the last item on a particular sale rack, or even the snarkiness of grumpy people waiting their turn in line. However, many of us prefer the stress-free shopping experience of not having to fight over mall parking spots, pushy line cutters, or sold-out items. Online shopping this season will provide a multitude of sales that will make the entire weekend after Thanksgiving a holiday of its own.

Here are some retailers to look out for as you shop online this holiday season:

Amazon.com: Deals on electronics, video games, DVD’s, and much more. Amazon is one of the leaders in making Cyber Monday as competitive and exciting as Black Friday. They offer “Gold Box” and “Lightening Deals” which are periodically available until the clock runs out or items are sold out; sometimes designer label merchandise can be sold for as much as 90% off if you happen to catch the hour or two that this deal is posted and are lucky enough to be among the first to add to your cart.
