Your wedding day. It’s a day you’ve looked forward to your whole life. Your parents, your family, your friends – everyone will be there. This is going to be, without any doubt, your day.

You know you want it so be special and unique, but how exactly? You’ve been to dozens of weddings, and you don’t want your special day to look like a carbon copy of someone else’s special day, so what can you do to make it your own?

Of course, the possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination (and, unfortunately, your budget!). In case you’re overwhelmed by all the options, here’s some ideas on themes you can adopt to make your wedding day very much your day.

Maybe you want a straight forward traditional wedding with formally-dressed guests, white table cloths, and all the trademark activities for the wedding party and guests. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, but if you want a wedding that will surprise your guests and have a twist of the unexpected, perhaps you can try a themed wedding? The theme you pick can lie anywhere on the spectrum from silly to dignified.

The Beach
Whether you exchange your vows on an actual beach, with the waves crashing in the background in front of a majestic setting sun, or you just love the laid back beach lifestyle, you can adorn your wedding with unique touches that will practically have your guests smelling the saltwater. Tropical drinks at the bar, table place cards made of shells, and a color theme based in deep ocean blues and emerald greens make for a breezy, relaxed atmosphere.

Fine Art
Even if you can’t reserve the courtyard of your local art museum for your big day, you can bring a touch of the finer things to your reception with a few select touches. Encourage your guests to dress in period formal attire, anything from zoot suits to outrageous costume jewelry. Centerpieces and table settings can be adorned in classic gilded styles. Perhaps instead of giving your tables simple numbers, name each one after a great artist; place examples of their work or notes of trivia about the artist near the place settings. After all, “you’re at the Monet table” sounds a lot nicer than “you’re at Table 6.”

Travel
Your guests will know they’re in for something different as soon as they receive their invitations in the form of airline boarding passes. From there, you can focus on destinations you’ve been to with your new spouse, or simply places you plan on going after the big day. An Eiffel Tower can sit at the center of the Paris table. Red, white, and green accessories can adorn the Italy table for your guests. If you’re bold enough, maybe you can convince the staff to adorn flight crew uniforms.

Picnic
If it’s a great day for a wedding, then it’s a great day for a picnic! Let your guests dress down a bit for the reception and come clad in breezy, casual summer attire. The reception can be held outside, with or without a tent (depending on how much you want to tempt the weather gods), with gingham tablecloths and picnic baskets galore, wild flowers and sunflowers taking the place of the more stoic traditional wedding flowers.

Seasons
Maybe the wedding is in the summer, but it’s your day – so go ahead and pick your favorite season. A winter theme can find your reception decked out entirely in white, with snowflake table cards and snowman centerpieces. Ice sculptures; can grace the head table and common areas. If autumn is your favorite time of year, a collection of rustic reds, yellows, and browns can dot the landscape of the hall, with hot cider on tap for the guests at the bar. Scatter some leaves around the dance floor to add some warmth and realism. A spring-themed wedding can be filled with fresh grass, eggs, pastels, birds and blue skies. Who knows, maybe the Easter Bunny can make a special appearance for the kids at the wedding.

 Wedding Theme

The nice thing with the above themes, or any other theme you can concoct on your own, is that it is entirely up to you how far into the theme you want to go with your wedding. You can settle for a few telling touches in your accessories or dresses, or you can go all out and create a completely unique and unexpected wedding your friends and family will talk about forever.
