Christmas is a busy time of year, with many people travelling to spend time with their loved ones or to simply get out of the stresses of organizing a massive Christmas party. But plenty of people spend Christmas at home and after spending a lot of money on Christmas presents and foods, you might be looking for inexpensive things to do. Especially for indoors wherein you can just relax your way out.

If you are staying home this Christmas, here is a list of fun activities you can do without breaking the budget.

Gingerbread House Competition

If you’re spending time with the family or a few friends, organize a fun gingerbread house competition. You could buy the ingredients from Amazon and have a set time for creating your best gingerbread house. Don’t forget to get some candy to decorate your homes. If you’re doing this with younger children, you could compile similar looking mini gingerbread houses for everyone and have the kids compete on who creates the best decorations.

Check Out Local Events

Your town or city is probably organizing a lot of things for families, adults, singles and anyone in between. Most events are free or have just a small entry fee. For example, local churches are bound to have Christmas concerts and nativity plays, with the towns often organizing light events or Christmas parades.

Have Fun With A Reindeer Hunt

Print out reindeer cutouts and hide them around the house, inside or outside depending on the weather. Once all of them are hidden, you can let the kids start hunting the reindeer. You can organize different prizes depending on how many reindeer they are able to find – if they find four, they can enjoy hot chocolate and if they find seven, they get a tiny toy car from Kohl’s.

Watch Your Favorite Christmas Movies

The holidays are perfect for spending time indoors, wearing your pajamas and watching movies. So, grab a bowl of popcorn (if you’re up for it, try one these flavored recipes from the Food Network) and jump on the sofa. Check out the selection of movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime, and don’t forget to shop for a few good movies from DVD Planet.

If you are running out of ideas, here are a few great Christmas movies:

• A Charlie Brown Christmas
• How the Grinch Stole Christmas
• Love Actually
• Home Alone

Go For A Drive Around Town

When the night settles in, the Christmas lights start shining brightly. There’s nothing better than illuminated homes and trees during winter. Pack some hot chocolate or coffee to your thermostat and go for a drive. You can drive around town, searching for the best Christmas light display. Don’t forget to listen to Christmas music while driving around!

Pin The Nose On The Reindeer

Play a Christmas version of the classic pin the tail on the donkey game. You can use a simple cardboard cutout, draw or cut eyes, mouth, and horns for the reindeer and create a few round, red noses from red paper. With the simple help of thumbtacks, you can get the kids sticking the nose to its correct position while blindfolded.

Organize A Potluck Christmas Party

If your neighbors and friends are also staying home, throw a big party after Christmas (on Boxing day, for example). Have the party in potluck style to ensure you don’t need to be in charge of sorting it out on your own. Find a good bottle of wine from the Wine Library and check out cheap groceries at Ocado to guarantee a great party. Make sure to decide who does what a beforehand to ensure you don’t end up with seven desserts and no mains!

Play Board Games

Shop for a new board game for Christmas from Target and then play it during the holidays. The game can be a great gift for the whole family or you could just treat yourself to something fun. There are tons of games that are suited for families, but even adults can play board games, with tons of options in design and style.

Spending Christmas at home is not a problem. There are tons of fun things you can do over the holidays, without spending a fortune having fun. Just gather a few loved ones around and enjoy the magical time of the year doing the above activities.
